Teaching Philosophy

Neoliberal approaches to education eschews raising questions of power instead shaping students to yield and capitulate to market demands.  Racialized capitalism in the United States has swallowed critical  education as a practice and praxis---whole. The corporate demands of a labor force focused solely on skill building and market appraised credentials creates passivity in the minds and bodies of citizens and removes our greatest defense against social control and government tyranny --intentional engagement with critical pedagogy and liberatory possibility.

Both public and higher education are largely defined through the corporate demand. Consequently, there is little interest in both public, private and higher education for understanding pedagogy as a deeply civic, political and moral practice – that is, pedagogy as a practice for freedom.

We provide an alternative pedagogical approach to arts education in a dynamic and safe space free of oppressive ideologies and social prejudices. Our courses delegitimize traditional teacher- student hierarchies by encouraging participants' agency via dialogue and critical reflection. Addressing the lived experience of course participants, each workshop is engaging and informative combining both theory and its practical application in daily life. BBWC’s pedagogical programming provides a radical education experience as a force for strengthening the imagination and expanding democratic public life.
